How can leaders drive change effectively when they are far from the field? They can rely on a network of "change champions" able to engage those around them.

Companies have never been under greater pressure to change. Technological advances, globalization, consolidation, etc. are all factors that increasingly require organizations to reinvent themselves.

Yet, studies show that large-scale change initiatives are fraught with risk at many levels. Indeed, the desired transformations often require a large number of employees to change their everyday behavior. Simply ordering people to change is not sufficient to achieve that.

Our selected publications point out a key driver that considerably improves the chances of realizing large-scale change programs successfully, namely, the presence of individuals able to lead change from the inside. Three important messages stem from this:

– Some people are naturally wired to act as change leaders, and are able to help those around them challenge their everyday behavior in order to improve their performance.

– Having a pool of change leaders considerably strengthens the change capacity of the organization.

– The mere presence of change leaders is not enough; the company must orient their efforts and provide them with day-to-day support.
