This short book does not offer a complete crisis management methodology, but rather shines light on a succession of some rather traditional points (need to take account of the emotional dimension when communicating, for example), as well as a few points that are more infrequently cited in publications on this subject. For instance, managers will certainly be interested in reading what the book has to say about independent experts able to support the company’s position in the media (chapter 11), the specific role of the CEO in times of crisis (chapters 5 and 12), the differences between communication in times of crisis versus normal situations (chapter 6) and managing information within the crisis unit (chapter 13).
Finally, this book is quick and easy to read, and provides short, yet striking examples (Swissair, Dow Corning, Shell’s Brent Spar, etc.) that underline the essential points of effective crisis management.
