Manageris opinion

While such a binary title could lead one to fear the worst, this book is actually much more subtle than it appears at first glance. Having received many first-hand accounts from readers since he published his best-seller, The No Asshole Rule, the author cites many real-life examples to identify and model what differentiates good bosses from bad.

For example, bad bosses quickly forget that they are under constant scrutiny and are emulated by their subordinates. Their behavioral laxity finally rubs off on the entire organization, right down the line. Conversely, good bosses are continuously aware of being under a “magnifying glass” at all times and do their best to set the example, even in the way they manage their mistakes. In a direct, caustic style, the author manages to communicate difficult messages, such as the need to show managerial courage and make delicate or unpopular decisions quickly. His concrete and easily applicable advice takes account of the real business world.

Readers who would like to put their management practices into perspective will likely find helpful ideas and recommendations here. However, offering this book to a bad boss in hopes that he will change his stripes is probably pointless, because the author notes that the latter is rarely aware of his or her flaws!
