The objective of this book is to take real-life situations to illustrate the main issues confronting foreign companies in China. The host of details cited in presenting these nine case studies is of great value and provides a very concrete vision of the type of problems most commonly encountered. The main weakness of the book is the limited number of solutions suggested – generally limited to comments by professors or consultants at the end of each case presentation.
Among the topics most convincingly illustrated, we would note joint venture management (chapter 3, Peugeot Guangzhou case), the relationship between the Chinese subsidiary with the parent company (chapter 4, Picanol case), and relations with the Chinese authorities (chapter 7, Carrefour case). On the human side, the last two chapters, devoted to expatriates and independent entrepreneurs, provide an enlightening glimpse of what things are really like for these adventurers set out to conquer the Chinese market.
