Some leaders stand out through their communicative energy. They push each member of their team to give it their best. Upon what does this type of leadership, often called “inspiring”, rely? Across four dimensions, according to Kristi Hedges. First, a strong capacity to focus their attention. When they interact with one of their staff, they are totally present in the “here and now”. At the receiving end, the employee feels that he/she really counts for his/her manager, that what is being said is important. Next, the inspiring leaders are capable of stepping aside to be at the service of the staff. The collective success takes precedence over their immediate interests. Another important dimension: they are dynamic, with a high level of energy, which enables them to spread positive emotions to their teams. Finally, a critical point: before being “inspiring”, they are themselves “inspired”—which means they have clearly identified their sources of motivation and the meaning of their mission. Each of these four dimensions is covered in three chapters, which enables the reader to clearly understand of what these aptitudes consist—and how to work on them.

Full of examples and advice, this book is an excellent starting point for any manager who wishes to further motivate his/her team.
