Creativity and Innovation

A PASSION FOR IDEAS

Supervised by Heinrich von Pierer and Bolko von Oetinger
Purdue University Press, 2002, 367 pages.

This collective work on innovation is distinguished by an originality completely in keeping with its subject matter. First, it was supervised by two executives belonging respectively to the business and consulting worlds, namely, Siemens and the Boston Consulting Group. It also contains collection of contributions from people rarely seen in management books, including the film director Peter Greenaway and the choreographer William Forsythe.

This book is composed of 26 contributions from different authors, half of which take the form of interviews. These contributions are structured into five topics, i.e. taking chances on the unknown, using interpersonal confrontations, ensuring the balance between order and innovation, creating an environment conducive to creativity, and questions about the legitimacy and meaning of innovation.

As in any collective work, the types and relevance of the different contributions vary, but the entire set offers original and stimulating food for thought.

Heinrich von Pierer is CEO of Siemens AG. Bolko von Oetinger is senior vice president of the Boston Consulting Group.
